------------- --------------- -------------
LEARN is a software language for interactive programs, i.e.,
for those programs in which the user participates in a kind of
conversation with the computer by typing responses to questions
posed by the computer. LEARN was written by Niagara Learning
System (N.L.S.). It is based on and can run computer programs
used by PILOT but has additional enhancements. PILOT stands for
Programmed Inquiry, Learning Or Teaching, and has been used
commonly as a language for computer-assisted instruction. PILOT
was first developed by John A. Starkweather at the University of
California in San Francisco. LEARN and PILOT ARE specialized
languages oriented toward dialogues, drills, tests, etc., rather
than toward some kind of computation handled well by general
purpose languages like BASIC or FORTRAN. If a BASIC program is
to handle free-response dialogue, the programmer must often make
unwieldy arrangements for processing input and comparing words or
portions of words that the program must recognize. In LEARN this
kind of processing is easy, and the programs are more readable by
human beings than they might be if they were written in another
computer languages.
LEARN is copyrighted to N.L.S and may be purchased for use by
writing to Terry Mason; 21 Lochinvar Dr.; St. Catharines, Ontario;
Canada; L2T 2B5. LEARN & LEARNT on diskette cost $50.00 (Canadian).
The programming manual will be provided to teachers/programmers.
LEARN for VAX/VMS costs $250. Site licensing for LEARN (not LEARNT -
teacher/programmer version) is available for $50. (The manual for
using LEARN provides a description of all operating procedures.)
